Building Leadership Confidenceopen/close
What is leadership really about? There are many, many books based on lots and lots of research and it’s good stuff!
Does knowing the theory help? Well sometimes, but having the confidence to lead in the first place and the courage of your convictions is a good starting place.
We think it is important to stretch your confidence (or comfort!) zone little by little. After all who want to work in a way that is uncomfortable – not many of us – so by increasing your confidence zone rather than jumping out of it means you are always comfortable!
When we are confident we enjoy what we are doing, when we enjoy what we are doing we offer more to others. When we get this right we get better staff and fingers crossed better people to be our stakeholders and customers. So leadership confidence is an essential ingredient for successful business.
We can help develop your leadership confidence by:
Coaching
Working with individuals to help them to explore what they believe about themselves – as a leader- and to use this valuable self awareness as a starting point for developing further what they will offer as a leader to those who work for them and to their organisation as a whole. See section on Measuring Emotional Resilience & Confidence
Group Workshops
Work with small groups of leaders in interactive workshops, to explore the links between confidence and success. We will help you to identify the easiest way to develop your collective confidence and develop a ‘can do’ culture - see next section: Measuring Emotional Resilience & Confidence.
Measuring Emotional Resilience & Confidenceopen/close
Having high levels of emotional resilience and confidence are linked to success.
Dr Peter Clough and his colleagues at the University of Hull and AQR Ltd have developed a Psychometric test to measure Mental Toughness (MTQ48). It provides a reliable and quick assessment of an individual’s ability to withstand pressure in a range of workplace environments.
MTQ48 measures mental toughness in terms of 4 core components:
- CONTROL – the extent to which we feel in control of our lives and our emotions
- CHALLENGE – how we respond to challenge and unplanned change
- COMMITMENT – how we respond to (demanding) goals and targets
- CONFIDENCE – in our abilities and in our dealings with others
The good news is ‘mental toughness’ can be developed. The MTQ48 provides valid information for individuals to review with a coach their current levels of ‘mental toughness’ and work on ways to develop behaviours and attitudes which will improve their performance and well-being.
MTQ48 can also be used to review the ‘mental toughness’ strengths of the team and identify strategies to improve collective capability. Again this can be done through one to one coaching sessions with each team member or in team workshops. We would recommend a combination of the two.
